Lymphedema Short-Stretch Compression Bandaging Consult- 30 minutes

Our Short-Stretch Compression Bandaging Consultation provides specialized care for individuals managing lymphedema or chronic swelling. During your visit, a certified therapist will:

  • Perform a detailed assessment of skin integrity, swelling, and limb size

  • Prior medical history, current skin care routine, fluid and fibrosis management will be reviewed.

Why Short-Stretch Bandaging Is Important for Lymphedema

Short-stretch compression bandaging is a cornerstone of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). It’s different from standard elastic bandages because it has very little stretch and provides a unique pressure profile:

    • High working pressure, low resting pressure → The bandages gently compress at rest, but when you move or contract your muscles, they create a pumping effect that helps move lymph fluid out of the swollen area.

    • Reduces swelling safely → Helps decongest the limb and soften hardened tissue (fibrosis).

    • Prepares for garments → Brings the limb to its smallest, most stable size before fitting into a medical compression garment.

    • Protects skin & comfort → Supports fragile skin and reduces the risk of further swelling or cellulitis infection.

Follow up appointments will be set after the initial consultation based on the assessment and plan of care. ***Please note: At the end of the consult, a compression plan will involve the purchasing of materials to bring to the following treatment appointments. These will range from anywhere from $50-$200 dollars depending on treatment plan.

Who this session is for

People with diagnosed lymphedema who are using, or about to start using, short-stretch bandaging — and people who have been given bandages with little instruction on how to apply them. Bandaging that is applied incorrectly can be uncomfortable and does not do what it is supposed to.

What happens in the session

A thirty-minute appointment focused entirely on the bandaging itself: the correct short-stretch layering for your limb, the tension gradient, and how to apply it yourself or teach someone at home to do it. Your therapist will watch you do it rather than only demonstrating, because that is the part that determines whether it works once you leave.

How to prepare

Bring the bandages, padding and garments you have been given, even if you are not sure what they are or have never used them. Wear clothing that gives easy access to the limb. If a family member or carer will be applying them at home, bring them to the appointment.

How many sessions you may need

Short-stretch bandaging is usually part of a wider plan rather than a one-off. Many people need a follow-up once they have tried it at home, because the questions that matter only surface once you have actually done it yourself.

Questions people ask

What is short-stretch bandaging?

A specific type of compression bandage with limited stretch, layered to produce a working pressure that changes as the limb moves. It behaves quite differently from the elastic bandages sold for sprains, which is why the application technique matters.

Do I need a referral for this?

Diagnosed lymphedema management has different requirements from a wellness session. Ask when you book and we will tell you exactly what applies to your situation.

Can somebody at home learn to do this?

Yes, and it is usually the point. Bring whoever will be applying them and they will be taught alongside you.
