Who this session is for

People managing everyday swelling, heaviness or fluid retention, and people who have been referred for maintenance work between other appointments. It is also the session most people book once they have had an initial consultation and know what their plan looks like.

What happens in the session

The full hour is hands-on. Manual lymphatic drainage is slow, light and rhythmic — much lighter than a massage, because the vessels being worked on sit just under the skin and firm pressure closes them rather than opening them. Your therapist begins by clearing the areas the fluid drains into before working the affected area, so there is somewhere for it to go. Most people find it relaxing and many fall asleep.

How to prepare

Wear or bring loose clothing, drink water beforehand, and avoid a heavy meal in the hour before. If you wear compression garments, bring them so your therapist can check the fit and show you how they fit into your routine.

How many sessions you may need

That depends on what is going on, and it is a question your therapist will answer properly once she has assessed you. Some people book a single session for a specific complaint; others come on a schedule while something resolves. Nobody is asked to commit to a course of treatment before an assessment.

Questions people ask

Is this the same as a regular massage?

No. A massage works muscle with firm pressure. Manual lymphatic drainage works the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin, which need very light, rhythmic pressure — firm pressure closes them. The two feel completely different.

Do I need a referral for this session?

Not for general wellness sessions, post-surgical recovery or general swelling. Diagnosed lymphedema management is different — ask when you book and we will tell you what applies to your situation.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Usually not. The pressure is light, so this is not a treatment people tend to feel the next day. Most people feel relaxed, and some notice they need the bathroom more than usual for a few hours.
